NordVPN Speed Test Results

NordVPN delivers 730 Mbps on a 1 Gbps fiber connection, retaining 73% of baseline speed. It ranks #1 out of 22 VPNs tested in our speed lab. Latency sits at 18 ms with just 0.1% packet loss. Throughput variance stays within ±18 Mbps, making it the most consistent performer we’ve measured.

This page covers speed testing in depth. For the full service review including streaming, privacy, and pricing, see our NordVPN review.

Is NordVPN Fast?

Yes. NordVPN is the fastest VPN we’ve tested. It beats ExpressVPN by 100 Mbps and Surfshark by 210 Mbps in raw throughput. Those numbers come from controlled tests on identical hardware across the same server locations.

Speed alone doesn’t tell the full story. Consistency matters just as much for real-world use. NordVPN’s ±18 Mbps variance means speeds barely fluctuate during long sessions. You won’t see random drops during a movie or a file transfer.

Speed Test Results by Protocol

Protocol choice determines your speed ceiling. We tested all three NordVPN protocols on the same 1 Gbps fiber line, same server, same time window.

NordLynx (WireGuard-based):

  • Download: 730 Mbps
  • Upload: 680 Mbps
  • Latency: 18 ms

IKEv2/IPsec:

  • Download: 490 Mbps
  • Upload: 440 Mbps
  • Latency: 24 ms

OpenVPN UDP:

  • Download: 310 Mbps
  • Upload: 270 Mbps
  • Latency: 32 ms

NordLynx outperforms OpenVPN by 135%. The gap comes from WireGuard’s leaner codebase. It runs roughly 4,000 lines of code versus OpenVPN’s 70,000+. Less overhead means faster encryption and decryption at every hop.

IKEv2 lands in the middle. It handles reconnections well on mobile but can’t match NordLynx on raw throughput. OpenVPN remains the slowest option. Use it only when you need TCP tunneling through restrictive firewalls.

Performance on Different Network Types

Your connection type shapes what NordVPN can deliver. We tested across four common scenarios.

Fiber (1 Gbps baseline): 730 Mbps download. This is the best-case scenario. NordLynx scales well on high-bandwidth connections without becoming the bottleneck.

Cable (300 Mbps baseline): 265 Mbps download. Retention drops to 88%. Cable connections introduce more jitter, which NordLynx handles better than OpenVPN due to its stateless handshake model.

Public WiFi (50 Mbps baseline): 41 Mbps download. Retention hits 82%. Latency jumped to 38 ms due to the shared access point. NordVPN’s quick-connect feature selected the nearest server in under 2 seconds.

Mobile 5G (200 Mbps baseline): 155 Mbps download. Retention sits at 77.5%. Cell towers introduce variable latency. NordLynx’s lightweight handshake keeps reconnections fast when switching between towers.

The pattern holds across all networks. NordLynx retains 73% to 88% of your base speed. Slower connections actually show higher retention percentages because encryption overhead is a smaller share of total bandwidth.

Streaming Performance and 4K Stability

Streaming demands sustained throughput, not peak speed. Netflix recommends 25 Mbps for 4K. NordVPN provides 29 times that on fiber.

We ran 4-hour streaming sessions across five platforms. Buffering events tell the real story.

PlatformResolutionBuffering EventsAvg Bitrate
Netflix4K HDR016 Mbps
Disney+4K014 Mbps
YouTube4K 60fps022 Mbps
Amazon Prime4K HDR018 Mbps
Twitch1080p 60fps08 Mbps

Zero buffering events across all platforms over 20 total hours of testing. NordVPN’s SmartPlay DNS system routes streaming traffic efficiently. Bitrate stayed locked at maximum quality within 3 seconds of playback start.

The ±18 Mbps variance never dipped throughput below the threshold any platform requires. Even on a 50 Mbps public WiFi connection, 4K streaming ran without interruption.

Gaming Latency and Torrenting Throughput

Gamers care about latency. Torrenters care about sustained download speeds. NordVPN delivers on both.

Gaming results (connecting to nearest server):

  • Ping: 18 ms (vs 11 ms without VPN)
  • Jitter: 2 ms
  • Packet loss: 0.1%

The 7 ms ping increase is barely perceptible. Competitive FPS games like Valorant ran without noticeable input delay. We tested across 50 matches with NordVPN active. No disconnections occurred.

Connecting to distant servers changes the picture. A US-to-Europe connection added 90 ms. A US-to-Asia connection added 160 ms. For gaming, always pick the closest server to your game’s datacenter.

Torrenting results:

  • Peak download: 710 Mbps on P2P-optimized servers
  • Average sustained: 680 Mbps over a 10 GB file
  • Upload contribution: 620 Mbps

NordVPN’s P2P-specialized servers avoid the routing overhead of standard servers. The app automatically redirects torrent traffic to these servers when it detects BitTorrent protocol. Throughput stayed within 7% of standard browsing speeds.

How NordVPN Compares to Top 5 Competitors by Speed

We tested all VPNs on the same 1 Gbps fiber connection using each provider’s fastest protocol. Same server locations where possible.

VPNDownloadLatencyPacket LossRank
NordVPN730 Mbps18 ms0.1%#1
ExpressVPN630 Mbps22 ms0.2%#2
PIA560 Mbps20 ms0.2%#3
Surfshark520 Mbps26 ms0.3%#4
CyberGhost410 Mbps34 ms0.4%#10

NordVPN leads by 100 Mbps over ExpressVPN. The gap widens further against budget options. CyberGhost delivers 44% less throughput with nearly double the latency.

NordLynx gives NordVPN its edge. ExpressVPN’s Lightway protocol is competitive but carries slightly more overhead. Surfshark uses WireGuard natively yet runs slower due to server infrastructure differences. CyberGhost’s network handles high traffic loads less efficiently during peak hours.

NordVPN also ranks first in our best VPN for speed roundup, which compares 22 providers head-to-head.

Testing Methodology

Transparent testing prevents misleading claims. Here’s exactly how we measured.

Hardware: Dell XPS 15 (Intel i7-13700H, 16 GB RAM) connected via Ethernet to a Comcast 1 Gbps fiber line. No WiFi variables on primary tests.

Software: Ookla Speedtest CLI, iPerf3 for throughput, PingPlotter for latency and jitter tracking. Each test ran NordVPN’s native Windows app, version 7.x.

Timing: Tests ran across three time windows daily (8 AM, 2 PM, 9 PM EST) for 7 consecutive days. Each data point is the average of 21 measurements. We connected to NordVPN’s recommended server in New York.

Controls: Baseline speed without VPN measured at each time window. All background apps closed. Windows Defender’s real-time scanning paused to eliminate interference.

Results reflect one geographic location. Users in different regions will see different absolute numbers. Retention percentages should remain comparable.

Why Is My NordVPN Slow?

Slow NordVPN speeds usually trace to five fixable causes.

Wrong protocol selected. OpenVPN delivers 310 Mbps versus NordLynx’s 730 Mbps. Switch to NordLynx in Settings > Connection > Protocol.

Distant server. Connecting to a server 5,000+ miles away adds 80 to 160 ms of latency. Use Quick Connect or manually pick the nearest server.

ISP throttling. Some ISPs throttle VPN traffic on specific ports. Switch NordVPN to TCP port 443, which ISPs rarely block because it matches HTTPS traffic.

Congested server. Popular servers slow down during peak hours. Check server load percentage in the app. Choose servers below 30% load.

Outdated app or drivers. Old NordVPN versions may lack NordLynx support. Update the app and your network adapter drivers.

Which NordVPN Protocol Is Fastest?

NordLynx wins every speed test we run. It delivers 730 Mbps, beating IKEv2 by 49% and OpenVPN by 135%. NordLynx should be your default for all activities.

Switch to OpenVPN TCP only when networks block UDP traffic. Use IKEv2 on iOS devices where NordLynx occasionally drops connections during app backgrounding.

Is NordVPN the Fastest VPN?

NordVPN holds the #1 position in our speed rankings across 22 tested providers. It delivers the highest throughput, the lowest latency, and the tightest speed variance. No other VPN we’ve tested matches its combination of raw speed and consistency. ExpressVPN comes closest at 630 Mbps but still trails by 16%.
